Quick Start

The essentials, so you can start working on your first project in a few minutes.

Step 1: Sign Up

  1. Go to formta.com and click Start free trial, or Get Personal, Get Studio or Get Pro on the pricing section
  2. Enter your Name, Email and a Password
  3. If you've selected a paid plan, you'll also select the Billing interval, the Number of users (Studio and Pro) and any Additional storage space
  4. Agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy
  5. Click Get started, or Continue to payment on a paid plan
  6. Confirm your email with the link we'll send you

If you sign up for the free trial, you'll get 30 days of Pro, with 5 GB of storage space, so you can test everything in Pro while you decide on a plan.

Step 2: Set Up Your Account

The first time you sign in, we'll walk you through three steps:

  1. What do you work with?: Select up to three options
  2. Set up your notifications and privacy preferences: Select which emails and notifications you'd like, and your analytics and AI settings
  3. Your account is ready: Select Take a quick tour to learn the basics, or Start creating to go directly to your first project

Step 3: Your First Project

Your account comes with a project called My First Project, which opens when you're done. Double-click its name in the header to rename it.

To start from a template instead, click on the page, type / and click Use template at the bottom of the element menu. To create another project, go to the Projects page and click New Project. See Creating Your First Project.

Step 4: Add Your First Element

  1. Click on the project page where you want the element, and type / to open the element menu
  2. Search for the element you want, or scroll through the list
  3. Click it to add it to the page in that spot
  4. Drag the element to move it, and drag its corners or sides to resize it

Some good elements to start with for organising a project:

  • Timeline: Shows your project's events, tasks and meetings
  • To Do Kanban: Tasks as cards you move between columns
  • Budget Sheet: Keep track of income and expenses, which you can connect to the Project Budget Status Chart to see the data visually
  • Inventory List: Overview of the files and assets you need for the project, you can filter it by category, tag or location and that way have a shortcut to the files and items that are relevant to that page
  • Whiteboard: For brainstorming with your team

Some good elements for creative work:

  • Moodboard: For collecting your visual inspiration
  • Storyboard: Plan a story frame by frame in detail
  • Photo Selection: Show photos to a client for review
  • Colour Palette: Define your brand colours or a scene's colour set
  • Mindmap: Map out your ideas and how they're connected

Step 5: Share Your Project

Add Team Members

If you haven't already added team members to your project, you can add them later:

  1. Hover Share in the header
  2. On a personal project, select Share with team. On a team project, select Add new team member
  3. Click the team members you want on the project to select them. If you're an admin, you can also click + to invite someone new by email, and select their access (Admin or Team) and their calendar and inventory access
  4. Click Invite

Send A Page To A Client

When you're ready to send a project page out for client review, it's easy to do:

  1. On the page you want to share, hover Share in the header and select Send to client
  2. Select a client, or add a new one with their name and email
  3. Click Send to Client

Your client gets an email with a link, where they can see your project page. They need an account in order to view and send revisions. This is the only way to keep your work secure and private. They don't need a paid subscription to be a client, and they won't receive any marketing emails from Formta unless they actively opt in.

Step 6: Keep Working

Formta saves everything automatically as you work, so there's no Save button to click. You can:

  • Close the tab and pick up where you left off
  • Press ⌘ / Ctrl + Z to undo and ⌘ / Ctrl + Shift + Z to redo, or use the undo and redo arrows in the header
